Message from the Dean

As one of the largest engineering college in the United States, our commitment to a culture of excellence rests in our ability to build, maintain and advocate quality in all that we do. As vice chancellor and dean, I am proud to lead Texas A&M Engineering in accomplishing these priorities:

Provide a positive learning environment – complete with a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – to prepare our students for their roles in society.

Attract, retain and reward the very best faculty available.

Offer advanced degree programs that provide depth, encourage research and amply prepare our students for advanced roles in industry or engineering education.

Develop research and extension activities that maintain the core values of our land-grant mission and bring advancement to our society.

Updating our infrastructure: the classrooms, laboratories and technology, which are the tools we use to teach, learn and develop knowledge.

In addition, when Texas A&M President Robert M. Gates announced the university’s faculty reinvestment plan two years ago, it was clear that engineering would reap the greatest bounty of new faculty positions: 98 through the reinvestment program and fourteen more through strategic negotiations for a total 112 new faculty positions by 2008.

This fall, we welcome an unprecedented 47 new faculty members to campus. Through aggressive marketing, recruiting and hiring, we are securing a stellar collection of educators, ranging in discipline and experience.

I hope you will take a moment to review the many worthwhile opportunities that exist for you to join us in expanding this culture of excellence. Our future is bright, based on the positive track record of our college, the outstanding accomplishments of our 12 academic departments, and the enthusiasm and commitment of our students, faculty and staff.

Our greatest challenges in the new millennium will be keeping pace with the overall demands for our diverse and growing responsibilities. We must enlist the aid of our closest friends to overcome an aging infrastructure, growing student population and decreased allocation of state funds.

With your support and our strengths, I believe Texas A&M Engineering is prepared to face these challenges head on. Like each of our former students, friends and industry partners, your contribution helps ensure the excellence we seek and directly impacts the society in which we all live.
